CATHEDRAL STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE

What are the Cathdral Standards of Excellence (CSOE)?

“The purpose of the Cathedral Standards of Excellence Program is to establish standards to ensure that every social fraternal organization at the University of Pittsburgh is fully committed to the highest quality of student experience for each of its members, with particular emphasis on academic achievement and campus involvement as defined by each organization.

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (OFSL) believes the Cathedral Standards of Excellence Program will form a basic standard for all fraternal organizations, and assist in supporting each organization’s development. The Cathedral Standards of Excellence Program will provide a framework for self-assessment, individual and group accountability, greater achievement of organizational goals, and the development of programs and practices that will lead to substantial enrichment of the fraternity and sorority experience. This program recognizes and rewards those organizations that consistently exceed expectations as well as provides guidance and support to those organizations that fail to meet the expectations of the University and the FSL Community.”

Chapter Size Classifications

Standards for each chapters will be adjusted according to the number of members each chapter has. Chapter rosters will be collected at the beginning of the fall semester to determine the chapter’s qualification. This will promote equity of standards for chapters within the fraternity and sorority life community. For each category, there will be standards for small, medium, and large size chapters. Chapters may go above and beyond the requirements in for their chapter standards, but a minimum must achieve the recruitment for their chapter size.

The three chapter size classifications are:

  • Small Chapter: 1-15 Members
  • Medium Chapter: 16-60 Members
  • Large Chapter:  60+ Members

How Can I See What Standards My Chapter Has Fulfilled?

In Fall of 2019, the IFC Chapter Presidents voted to make their CSOE progress public and accessible to all in an effort to make the CSOE more inclusive to all chapter members. IFC and OFSL are currently implementing a public spreadsheet to display this information, but in the meantime, we would like to provide the following spreadsheet to assist chapters in keeping track of their own standards
